SCHOLARSHIP

Barbara Mae Frisby Caregiver
Award for Books, Education, Training or Respite care

The Barbara Mae Frisby scholarship provides financial support to a family member caring for a loved one or a young adult who is pursuing a degree or career in the Nursing or Healthcare industry.

Barbara Mae Frisby comes from a family of caretakers. Through her work of service to the people, she continued the Shinnecock legacy through caregiving.  Her mother, Beatrice Summers was a midwife delivering the babies in the African American community of Carroll County as well as, caring for the elderly and disabled in the community.  Her husband Theodore Frisby was a personal male nurse.  Therefore, it was only natural for Barbara to become a caregiver.

Barbara was a caregiver for years.  She took care of the elderly seniors in her community for most of her adult life.  Later, she became a foster parent to over 50 adolescent children.  When Barbara became ill and required 24-hour care, she went to live in a Nursing Home.  Many of the staff loved taking care of Barbara because she understood the value and importance of what it meant to be a caregiver.

In today’s society, the population of older adults continues to grow and life spans lengthen, more and more Baby Boomers, and young people are taking on the caregiver role for older loved ones. Although caregiving can be rewarding, it can also be challenging.  A caregiver is a person who takes care of the needs or concerns of a person with short- or long-term limitations due to illness, injury, or disability. The term “family caregiver” describes individuals who care for members of their family of origin, but also refers to those who care for their family of choice. This could be members of their congregation, neighbors, or close friends. Family caregivers play a significant role in health care, as they are often the main source of valuable information about the patient. Boomers as well as, young adults often carry out the demands of caring for a loved one which include, stress, anxiety, the feeling of being overwhelmed, a sense of helplessness, sleep deprivation, etc. which; if left untreated, can cause significant health issues.
